Surf video analysis: how a coach turns your clips into real gains
What surf video analysis actually looks like, what a good coach annotates, how to film usable footage, and what to expect back within 48 hours.

Surf video analysis is the single fastest way to level up your surfing outside of just surfing more. It takes the guesswork out — you stop trying to fix things you're not actually doing wrong, and start fixing the one or two things that are really holding you back.
What a coach is actually looking at
- Paddle position and take-off timing — where your weight is when the wave lifts you.
- Pop-up mechanics — feet placement, hip rotation, where your eyes go.
- Stance width and knee bend on the drop.
- Bottom turn — rail engagement, compression, line up the face.
- Top turn — where you commit, how you finish, recovery.
- Trim and flow between manoeuvres.
What you get back
On SRCH, a single video analysis comes back as a video file with the coach's voiceover, on-screen annotations (arrows, lines, freeze-frames), and a short written summary of your top 2–3 focus points and drills for your next session. Turnaround is 48 hours.
How to film footage a coach can actually use
- Film from the beach or channel, not from another surfer's GoPro. Wide framing helps.
- Get the whole wave: paddle, take-off, and the ride — not just the good bit.
- 10 minutes of good clips beats 40 minutes of paddling.
- Include at least a few waves you feel went badly. Those are the gold.
- Say your board dimensions and the spot in the notes when you upload.
How often to do it
Most surfers get the biggest jump from one review every 4–6 weeks. That's enough time to actually work on the drills your coach gives you and film new footage that shows the change (or the next thing to fix).
